Module 1: Family Life

Summary: Sharing Family Responsibilities

Key points

  • In many families today, mothers and fathers share the chores and the bringing up of children.
  • Children can help too: looking after a younger brother, doing the shopping, watering the plants.
  • We use the comparative to compare two people or things.
  • We use the superlative to say who or what is at the top of a group.
  • Comparatives can express facts (he is older) or opinions (cooking is more exciting).

Rules to remember

Short adjectives
adjective + -er than / the + adjective + -est: older than, the oldest.
Long adjectives
more + adjective + than / the most + adjective: more patient than, the most patient.
Spelling
nice ➡️ nicer; big ➡️ bigger; happy ➡️ happier.
Irregular
good ➡️ better ➡️ the best; bad ➡️ worse ➡️ the worst; far ➡️ farther ➡️ the farthest.

How to do it

  1. Count the syllables of the adjective.
  2. Short: add -er / -est (check the spelling).
  3. Long: use more / the most.
  4. Add than after a comparative; the before a superlative.

Example

Salma is older than Hamza, but Grandma is the wisest person in the family.

Common mistakes

  • *more taller* ➡️ taller
  • *older that me* ➡️ older than me
  • *the most good* ➡️ the best
