Sharing the Housework
The Trabelsi family live in a small flat in Bizerte. Mrs Trabelsi is a doctor and she often works late at the hospital, while her husband is a teacher who comes home at four. Last year, the family decided to share the housework.
Now everyone has a job. Mr Trabelsi cooks dinner on weekdays because he is the best cook in the family. Their son Amine, who is fifteen, does the shopping and takes out the rubbish. His sister Rim, who is younger than him, feeds the cat and sets the table. Grandma Zohra looks after little Yassine when nobody else is at home.
At first, Amine was not happy. “Why do I have to carry the heavy bags?” he asked. His father smiled and answered, “Because you are taller and stronger than your sister!” Today, Amine admits that the family is happier than before. “Our home is not as noisy as it was,” he says. “We don’t argue about who should wash the dishes any more.”
On Sunday evenings, the Trabelsis sit together and plan the week. It is the most relaxing moment of their week, and nobody wants to miss it.

After handing in your paper: practise the writing task (it is not part of the mark out of 20).
Writing: housework in my family
writing and self-assessmentYour English teacher wants to know how families share the housework.
Task: write a paragraph of 8 to 10 lines about your family. Say who does what at home, compare the members of your family (older, younger, the best at…) and give your opinion about sharing the housework.
Steps
- I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
- I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
- I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
- I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.
I assess my text: I tick each criterion I have met
A model text to compare with (after writing mine)
In my family, everybody helps at home. My mother works in a bank, so she comes home late, while my father is a farmer and starts work very early. That is why we decided to share the housework. My father makes breakfast because he gets up first. My elder sister Ines is the best cook in the family, so she prepares lunch at the weekend. I am younger than her, but I am stronger, so I carry the shopping and water the plants. My little brother is too young to cook, but he tidies his toys and feeds the birds. In my opinion, sharing the housework is fair and useful. Our home is cleaner than before, and my mother is not as tired as she used to be. We are a real team!
One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
