A Concert for a Good Cause

Last month, the music club of a school in Bizerte organised a charity concert to buy wheelchairs for a local association. The pupils had been preparing it for three months.

“Why don’t we sell tickets online?” suggested Yasmine, the club president. Her idea was a great success: all four hundred tickets were sold in two weeks. “What a wonderful audience!” she said on the night of the concert.

While the band was playing, younger pupils were selling handmade bracelets at the entrance. Some parents could not come, so the concert was also broadcast on the school’s website. “I’m sorry that my grandmother missed it,” said one pupil, “but she watched it online.”

In the end, the club raised enough money for three wheelchairs. “I think that music can bring people together for good causes,” said the headmaster. “I hope that we will do it again next year.”

Writing: a report for the school magazine

writing and self-assessment

Your school organised an event (a concert, a fair, a sports day…) to collect money for a good cause.

Task: write a short report of 8 to 10 lines for the school magazine. Say what the event was, what people were doing during it, how much money was raised and what you hope for next year.

Steps
  1. I read the task and underline: who I write to, the topic, the length, the type of text.
  2. I list my ideas, then I put them in order: introduction, two or three points, conclusion.
  3. I write my draft with linking words (first, then, because, while, so, finally).
  4. I check with the checklist: grammar of the module, spelling, capital letters, full stops.

A Fun Run for the Children’s Hospital

Last Sunday, our school organised a fun run to collect money for the children’s hospital in Sfax. More than two hundred runners took part: pupils, teachers and even grandparents! While the runners were racing along the beach, the music club was playing in the park, and volunteers were giving water to everybody. What a beautiful day! In the end, we raised 3,000 dinars, which will buy toys and books for the young patients. I think that sport and solidarity go very well together. I hope that next year even more people will join us.

One good example among many: compare, don’t copy.
