A New Start

1. When Youssef’s father found a new job in Tunis, the family had to move from their small town in the south. Youssef was thirteen and he had never changed school before. In his old school, he knew every teacher and every pupil. On his first day at the new school, he felt lost. The building was huge and the corridors were full of noisy students who did not even notice him.

2. The first weeks were the most difficult. Some boys in his class laughed at his accent and taunted him during the breaks. “I stopped speaking in class because I was afraid of their jokes,” Youssef remembers. His marks fell and he sometimes pretended to be ill so that he could stay at home. One day, his English teacher, Mrs Gharbi, noticed that he was sitting alone in the playground. After a long talk, she invited him to join the school drama club, which met every Wednesday afternoon.

3. At the end of the year, the club performed a play in front of the whole school. Youssef played a funny old shopkeeper from the south, and the audience laughed and clapped for a long time. The boys who had taunted him came to congratulate him, and some of them even joined the club the following year. “Today, I’m proud of my accent,” he says. “Next year, I’m going to help new pupils who feel as lonely as I felt.”

Your school is organising an “Anti-Violence Week”. The school magazine asks pupils to give their opinion.

Write a 10-line article in which you talk about the forms of violence at school and suggest at least three ways to stop it.

Do not write your name. Do not mention your school.

Answer elements · عناصر الإجابة
  • Layout: a title (e.g. Say No to Violence at School!), an introduction, a body with the forms and the solutions, a short conclusion.
  • Ideas: forms: fighting, taunting, insults, bullying online · solutions: clubs and sports to release energy; a listening cell with a counsellor; strict school rules and punishment; talking to parents and teachers; respect for differences (accent, look, origin).
  • Useful language: must / have to / should, first, also, moreover, finally, because, so, in my opinion.
  • Model: Say No to Violence at School! Nowadays, violence has become a real problem in many schools. Some pupils fight in the playground, others insult or taunt their classmates because of their accent or their clothes, and some even bully them online. To stop this, every school must have clear rules, and pupils who break them have to be punished. Moreover, schools should create more clubs and sports activities, so that pupils can release their energy in a positive way. A counsellor should also listen to victims and help them. Finally, we must learn to respect people who are different from us. School should be a safe place for everyone.
